If you've strolled through your favorite cosmetics store or read the latest beauty blogs, you likely have noticed a large number of natural deodorants. But, what makes biodegradable deodorants so unique? We put together a list of reasons why you should consider switching to zero waste deodorant:
1. No Toxins
Most traditional deodorants are made with toxins. Toxic for your body and toxic for the environment. Unfortunately, most people aren't aware that they are smothering their pits in chemicals. Zero waste deodorants provide an easy alternative so that you are using the best ingredients to keep yourself healthy.
The best part about zero waste deodorants is that they are zero waste! They are made to have a low impact on the environment. These deodorants are produced with natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging to improve sustainability for our planet.
Ditch the traditional deodorant stick and go plastic-free with us! This might be the best thing you do for your body and the environment. We promise you won't regret it!
3. Say Goodbye to Yellow Stains
Mixing aluminum from traditional deodorants with the sweat and fabric from your shirt is the perfect recipe to get those yellow underarm stains. Fortunately, by using aluminum-free, zero waste deodorant, you can avoid this problem. Keep your cute shirts clean and stain-free!
Sweating is a great way to cool your body down and release toxins. With natural deodorant, you don't risk clogging your pores to prevent sweat as a traditional deodorant might do. Instead, it allows for you to sweat, stress-free! We'll take care of the odour.
5. Reducing Irritation
Your underarms are one of the most easily irritable parts of your body. The buildup of sweat under your skin from clogging can cause a lot of discomfort and irritation when using conventional deodorants. Zero waste deodorants are great for keeping your skin smooth and soft while minimizing irritation.
The Truth About Traditional Deodorants
If you're skeptical and still not convinced to get rid of your favorite smelling deodorant, that's okay! There's a reason that these deodorants smell great. Traditional deodorants are made with a lot of chemicals and toxins and, unfortunately, lead to health concerns.
Harmful Ingredients in Conventional Deodorants and Antiperspirants
- Parabens. These are used in deodorants as a preservative. Parabens impede the release of hormones, including estrogen. These chemicals in deodorants are linked to cancer.
- Aluminum. Researchers suspect that aluminum promotes the growth of cancerous cells near breast tissues. Although the results are not conclusive yet, it is something to be mindful of.
- Phthalates. These are added in deodorants to help the fragrance stay on your underarms for a longer time. Phthalates hinder the production of testosterone and impact muscle maintenance.

The Transition to Zero Waste Deodorant
It's never been easier to make the transition to zero waste deodorant. With many people working from home, you can finally detox your pores, worry-free. If you've used conventional deodorants all your life and are transitioning to natural deodorant, you might find it useful to follow these tips!
The Detox Period
Most people become discouraged when natural deodorant doesn't work the way they expect it to. After years of using deodorants with aluminum, your pores will be clogged with a buildup of sweat under your skin. Welcome to the Detox Period! You might end up a bit smellier for a couple of days, but don't worry; this is totally normal and part of the detox process!
TIPS TO DETOX YOUR ARMPITS
- Go natural. Let your armpits loose for a couple of days. It's okay if you sweat more! You're releasing all the nasty toxins you've built up using traditional deodorants.
- Masks. To help detoxify your underarms, use a bentonite clay mask. This will help the body get rid of toxins as well as reduce your body odor. Apply the clay mask for about 10 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water.
- Exfoliate + Cleanse. Use gentle cleansers to exfoliate out any bacterial imbalances in your underarms. Wash, lather, and rinse your armpits daily. Make sure to dry your armpits thoroughly after your shower to prevent bacterial growth in moist environments.
- Essential Oils. If you can't stand the smell of your body odor, you can use essential oils to mask the scent. My personal favorite is coconut oil. It's natural and non-irritating. But, you can also use lavender and tea tree oil.
- Clothes. Certain fabrics make body odour worse! Wear shirts with natural fibres like cotton. Synthetic material like polyester traps and absorbs odour giving you a terrible smell throughout the day.
- Your Intake. Drink plenty of water. This will help you release toxin buildup. You'll soon start to notice better smelling body odour! But this goes hand-in-hand with eating healthy. Eat a lot of greens and stay away from alcohol, garlic and seafood.
Zero waste deodorants are the perfect way to take care of your body and live sustainably. Keep your familiar bathroom routine, but do it guilt-free. At Wellow, we strive to be transparent! We want to show you exactly what you will be using on your body. Our biodegradable deodorants are made with natural ingredients that will have you smelling fresh.
